Roman Cudakowski, dla przyjaciół Cudak, gra w kapeli na weselach i miejskich imprezach. W czasie okupacji muzykowi nie wiedzie się dobrze. Szansą na zarobek stają się wstępy w lokalu dla Niemców. Ci nie wyobrażają siebie jednak orkiestry bez skrzypka. Wówczas Cudak na koncerty wyprowadza z getta uzdolnionego Szymona Akermana, z którym przed wojną nie żył w zgodzie. W nowej rzeczywistości obydwaj nawzajem siebie potrzebują: Cudak może zarabiać grając z Akermanem, ten natomiast zyskuje szansę na przeżycie. Pewnego dnia Roman decyduje się na stałe zabrać z getta skrzypka z jego rodziną, by ukrywać ich z narażeniem życia w swoim domu.
